Video Tutorials

I think that video tutorials are a great way of learning. They can be fun and creative while teaching you a large variety of skills and allow a student to move backwards to repeat a step. Video tutorials might not be for everyone, especially those that are hearing impaired or those that learn better by reading instead of seeing, but those that are able to use the videos may be saved a lot of frustration. Most of the following video links will take you to the YouTube page where the video is being hosted.

Tutorials Focused On The Basics:

“Noob Be Gone” Second Life camera tutorial by NSS: “The first in a series of tutorial videos, geared to teach the ins and outs of Second Life to new residents. This episode encompases how to interact with objects, different forms of camera controls, and a few ‘unknown’ tricks. Professional editing and quality coupled with comedy and visual entertainment make this a pleasurable learning experience.”

“Noob Be Gone” Second Life building tutorial by the folks at NSS: “The second installment of Natural Selection Studios’ Noob Be Gone series is here! This tutorial encompasses basic building inside Second Life – as well as continuing camera controls learned in the first episode. An on-going learning experience: this video has its light sides to accompany its teaching forefront while attempting to teach ‘tricks and tips’ in the process.”

How to get started in Second Life: A general introduction into Second Life (34 minutes). Topics: The Avatar, Communication, Search, Interaction, Some Locations to show the wide range of possible activities in SL (in German and English, by Mkyschnitzel Campbell). He moves a little faster than some residents might like, but this is what makes the back-up function so great: rewind to anything you might need repeated.

Tutorials Focus On Building/Scripting:

Building.com – Building in Second Life: This is a link to the building.com website, where you can find many building tutorials such as building a working clock or radio, build a door that opens and closes, and many other neat and useful guides. The website looks like it is updated frequently.

Second Life Tutorials by Doe-Hyung Kim is a guide created to assist residents, new and old, to build different objects with scripts. There are also other helpful tutorials on creating links to other notecards, objects, landmarks, and scripts in Second Life.
